So is there no replacement for the airbag or is it an option, swap the airbag or buy-back?

There will be replacements but along way off

BMW want people to stop driving the cars now though, some are accepting buy backs and some aren’t

I know it’s a lot of airbags world wide, but this has been going on quite a while now. Any idea how many cars they’ve done or percentage (for some reason I don’t think it’s much).

Basically, the owner either accepts the buyback OR accepts that the authorities will refuse registration of the vehicle when next it comes due...

Once BMW Oz has what they feel is the economic majority of them in the country ...why would they offer a replacement part? These cars will almost certainly be scrapped and parted offshore.

Sad... I like the e46 quite a bit, it’d be a shame if otherwise mechanically sound and roadworthy vehicles were scrapped. Odd that it’s apparently not possible to retrofit a newer steering wheel or anything...

It probably is possible. However, the recall is enforceable so anyone who has one would have to demonstrate that the vehicle has been compliantly modified and this can only be achieved with an engineer’s certificate and then go through the rigmarole of carrying that through the system.

So it may be possible...but not entirely practical.
